This title is being sold in the downloadable VitalBook™ format.
The objective of this book remains the same as the first edition, which is to enable the student or practitioner of dentistry to learn the essentials and fundamentals underlying the diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment of common orthodontic target disorders. The book is divided into sections to roughly coincide with the four years of dental education. This does not imply any absolute necessity of sequencing of studies but is meant only to represent, by way of an outline, one sequence of viewing the orthodontic heuristic process.
Section I, Growth and Development, contains five basic growth and development chapters, encompassing Developmental, Psychosocial, Behavioral and Compliance Aspects of Care, Prenatal Craniofacial Development, Postnatal Craniofacial Development, Growth of the Craniofacial Skeleton and Development of the Dentition and Occlusion. These chapters represent typical courses of study that relate to orthodontics which may be found in the first or second years of dental school.
Section II, Foundations for Orthodontics, covers Classification and Terminology, Etiology of Malocclusion, Mechanisms of Orthodontic Movement, Force Systems and Tissues Response, Toward Molecular Orthodontics, and Clinical Epidemiology and Malocclusion. This material is typically taught in the first, second or third years of dental school.
Section III, titled Examination and Diagnosis, covers Orthodontic Exam and Diagnosis, Analysis of Orofacial and Jaw Musculature, Analysis of Dentition and Occlusion, Dental Dysmorphogenesis, 2D & 3D Imaging and Analysis of the Orthodontic Patient and Planning Orthodontic Treatment. This material is usually taught in the second or third years of dental school, previous to clinical rotations.
Section IV, titled Space Treatment and Effects, covers Preadolescent Treatment, Adolescent Treatment, Adult Treatment, Treatment of Patients with Craniofacial Anomalies, Retention, Relapse, and The Recurrence of Malocclusion, The Adverse Effects of Orthodontic Treatment and A Guide Toward Clinical Competence for the General Practitioner: Management of Malocclusion and Skeletal Problems. Each chapter author has tried to create a chapter that represents a balanced approach to their topic while emphasizing facts in light of any substantive new approaches to their topic area.
The book’s contributors are made up of a well-known group of university-based professionals and clinicians who represent 18 schools and 23 departments. Each author has continued to follow the literature to ensure that new important information was incorporated into the text. Every chapter has been constructed and sequenced to integrally fit the text. The authors continue to recognize the weaknesses of a multiple author text: a lack of continuity of thought and format. We have worked hard to achieve a “mind-meld”. Each of the authors continue to work tirelessly to create an error-free text with little expectation that this miracle will occur.
The format of the text remains the same and is unique in that the chapter outlines are paginated, the glossary terms are emboldened in every chapter of the text and the chapter headings are graphically tied to each section, giving a positive visual reference to the chapters. A full color presentation adds to the book by enhancing the clinical cases and clarifying the histologic sections. All chapter authors have followed the suggestion to place all figures on facing pages with text to make the book’s use easier. Chapters and topics that are unique for an orthodontic text are 1, 5, 10, 11, 15, 16, 22, 23, and 24. (Developmental, Psychosocial, Behavioral and Compliance Aspects of Care, Development of the Dentition and Occlusion, Toward Molecular Orthodontics, Clinical Epidemiology and Malocclusion, Dental Dysmorphogenesis, 2D & 3D Imaging and Analysis of the Orthdontic Patient, Retention, Relapse, and The Recurrence of Malocclusion, and The Adverse Effects of Orthodontic Treatment, A Guide Toward Clinical Competence for the General Practitioner: Management of Malocclusion and Skeletal Problems).
The aim of the text is to serve to stimulate students’ investigation through various demonstrations, which may tend to lead students to further explore by themselves. No book will satisfy every need, though we hope you find that this text’s depth and breadth offer an excellent foundation for the study of orthodontics. Please send any questions that may arise directly to the chapter authors.
